MIDI Cables

A range of good quality MIDI cables in varying lengths, suitable for connecting our MIDI circuits to other devices. All cables have oxygen-free copper conductors and black overall insulation and are available in lengths of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.8 metres.

Ribbon Cable Components

20-way connectors and ribbon cable lengths for making up connections for either PTM-1 inputs or between an MTP-9 and OBM-2 / OBM-3 output modules.

Connectors are supplied individually (note: you may need 2 connectors per cable). The colours of the connectors supplied may vary according to stock availability and will typically be either black or grey. Connectors are priced at £0.20 each.

Cable lengths are supplied in multiples of 1m up to a maximum of 30m in a single length. To order a 2m length of cable, for example, add 1 cable to the order list and then set the quantity of that item in the order list to 2. If you order 2 lengths of cable as separate items with 1 as the quantity for each, you will receive 2 pieces of cable, each 1m long. The price of ribbon cable is £0.80 per metre.

Either a purpose-designed IDC assembly tool or a small bench vice will be needed to compress the connector parts together onto the cable in order to make up the termination. The cable can be cut with a sharp pair of scissors to whatever length(s) are required for your application.

ULN2803 Output Driver

If an MTP-7/8 circuit fails due to overload of one or more of its note switching outputs, the most common damage is to whichever on-board ULN2803 device drives the overloaded output. In many cases, the MTP circuit can be returned to full working order simply by replacing the damaged device. Since the ULN2803 devices are fitted into sockets, replacement only takes a few seconds requires no soldering. It is advisable to have one or two spare to try in case of damage before sending the entire MTP circuit back to j-Omega Electronics for repair. ULN2803 devices are priced at £1.20 (UK Pounds) each.

Infra-Red Keyboard / Music Roll Sensors

A spectrally-matched infra-red emitter and detector pair that can be connected to an input of a PTM-1 circuit to sense the movement of a key on a keyboard or a hole in paper / cardboard book music. With an array of these devices (one per key or tracker hole), and a PTM-1, a complete keyboard interface or roll / book scanning system can be built. One sensor can be as close as 3.1mm to the next, so these are a suitable size for all common keyboard, roll and book music formats.

The emitter is Osram type SFH409 and the detector is Osram type SFH5140F.

A pair consisting of one emitter and one detector is priced at £0.85 (UK Pounds) each.

OBM-1

The OBM-1 output booster/buffer module enables either an MTP-7 or MTP-8 MIDI-to-parallel circuit to switch much larger loads than normal. Taking the place of any usual ULN2803A octal output driver chip, the OBM-1 is quick and easy to install and requires no soldering. Each OBM-1 module controls 8 outputs and is rated at 1.5A per output. One OBM-1 module will be required for every eight MTP outputs that are to be upgraded in current rating.

OBM-2

The OBM-2 output booster/buffer module allows an MTP-9 MIDI-to-parallel circuit to switch 16 loads of up to 500 mA each at up to 35 Volts, inductive or resistive in open-collector (pull-down) configuration. Connection is by industry-standard IDC headers which can link to the MTP-9 using 20-way flat ribbon cable. The power connection is made by high quality risig-clamp screw terminals. No soldering is required for any connections. The circuit is supplied as a single high quality glass fibre PCB measuring 81 x 41mm with four 3.2mm holes for mounting.

OBM-3

OBM-4

The OBM-4 output booster/buffer module converts eight of the outputs of an MTP-7 or MTP-8 to active high, pull-up type. This allows the MTP-7 or MTP-8 to be used to control existing instruments that have active high inputs and are impractical to swap over to active low. Taking the place of any usual ULN2803A octal output driver chip, an OBM-4 is quick and easy to install and requires no soldering. Each OBM-4 module controls 8 outputs and is rated at 0.5A per output. One OBM-4 module will be required for every eight MTP outputs that are to be converted to active high operation. Up to four OBM-4s can be used with an MTP-7 and up to eight with an MTP-8.
